Finding Harmony while in Isolation

As we all adjust to a new version of daily life, one thing remains constant and strong – our FHSD community. FHC seniors Emma Smallen and Lauren Marino started a fundraiser to support students in need who may have been additionally impacted by the pandemic. These musicians used their talents and organized a virtual charity concert to raise money for the FHSD Backpack Meal Assistance Program, which distributes meals to students and families.

Smallen and Marino, who both participate in the music program at FHC, started a band last year called Paperboy. The band recently released their first album Self-Titled. “Ever since we started this band, we wanted to do a gig that would benefit charities,” said Marino. The students decided what better time to give back than the current situation. “FHSD feels like family, and as family, we need to support one another,” continued Marino.

In order to get the word out about the concert, the students posted on social media and reached out to family and friends. They practiced their music virtually for a week and took song requests in advance. On March 28, they performed on YouTube Live raising more than $600, all while practicing social distancing. “It’s nice to know that I can do something that others are able to enjoy and will better our community,” said Smallen.

As Marino and Smallen close out their final year in FHSD, there is some sadness, but also a lot of hope. “I know that I may never get an official ‘last day of high school,’ but we can hopefully find good among all of the fear,” said Marino.

For Smallen, she encourages her peers to stay positive during this time. “We are definitely going through hard times right now, but finding a purpose while at home can be a benefit to you and those around you, whether that is finding a new hobby such as music or art, donating to others, or just talking to people virtually,” shared Smallen.

Even though we are not together, FHSD remains strong and together at heart. For more information about the Backpack Meal Assistance Program or to donate, please visit the FHSD Webstore.
