November is a time of year dedicated to giving thanks – thanks for family and friends, a good education, and good food. For a group of FHC students, however, it is a time to give thanks to the men and women who serve our country. Since November is a month full of holidays, FHC’s Epsilon Beta and senior Kaleb Foster saw this as an opportunity to collect special donations for our inspiring veterans.

The candy was then sent off to Operation Gratitude to be included in care packages for the troops. Kaleb’s sister Isabella, a seventh grader at Bryan Middle School, also organized a Halloween drive at her school.

The two siblings have many family members who have served in the military, including their father, a Navy veteran. “I feel like for as much as they sacrifice and as much time and effort as they put into defending our freedoms and liberties that giving back to them is the least we can do,” said Kaleb. He plans to continue his family’s service and join the ROTC program in college next year. “It’s something that I base my beliefs and values on and that is important to me.”

In addition to Kaleb’s donations, Epsilon Beta organized their own initiatives for veterans. For Veterans Day they promoted a wish list and encouraged students to donate everyday items to the USO of Missouri, including food and hygiene products. They also organized a Thanksgiving basket drive for students to donate non-perishable items or money for Thanksgiving turkeys. “It’s important to donate to veterans because of how much they have given to you,” said Epsilon Beta member Myah Eggert. “Paying back to them is something they don’t expect.”

FHSD is proud of the many ways that our students honor our veterans each year, especially during the holiday season. Way to go, Spartans!
