On March 10, student leaders from FHSD’s high schools took part in the final Gateway2Change Student Summit on Race of the school year at St. Louis University. When Gateway2Change met last November, prominent local businesses and organizations outlined the challenges they face in the areas of social and cultural diversity and equity. During the summit, student leaders presented their ideas and solutions to these real-world problems.
FHC DECA Chapter Markets Itself Well at Annual Conference

FHSD National Signing Day

Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017 is National Signing Day, the first day that a high school senior can sign a binding National Letter of Intent (NLI) to play NCAA football. In the Francis Howell School District (FHSD), it is a day to honor the student-athletes in all sports as they prepare for the next step in their academic and athletic careers.
FHSD’s Inaugural Job Fair for Students is Well-Attended

On Jan. 11, 2017, Francis Howell School District (FHSD) hosted its inaugural Job Fair for high school students, and the evening was a tremendous success. Thirty-two businesses and 357 students participated in an event that was the ideal introduction for students to the workforce. From practicing their interview and resume-writing skills to just learning how to dress to impress a potential employer, both students and area businesses got a return on their investment. Better-prepared students mean better employees, which means better business and better communities. It was more than practice; it was a practice in success.

Access to the Arts for Everyone – Thanks to FHC Drama

The arts are an important part of education for so many reasons, and they enrich our lives in many ways. A program has been implemented by a theater group in St. Louis that enables area youth with physical, cognitive, and/or developmental delays to participate in musical theater arts, inspiring the Francis Howell Central (FHC) High School Drama Club to get involved. This fall, FHC Drama was able to sponsor (through a grant) a “Disney Review” for these students.
Francis Howell Central Spartan Hall of Fame Ceremony

The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) prides itself on its extensive history (more than 100 years) of serving the community. And although Francis Howell Central (FHC) hasn’t been around the entire 100 years, the Spartan history and its list of sports legends continues to grow. On Friday, Dec. 16, FHC hosted its annual Spartan Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. In an evening marked by a terrible ice storm, FHC was still jam-packed with alumni, showcasing their appreciation for these Hall of Famers and their contributions to the school and District.

Countless food drives and other donations have positively affected the lives of those less fortunate, and also instilled a desire in students to be leaders in their communities.

Francis Howell Central (FHC) High School has an opportunity for students to study up for their coming tests and projects with “Cram Central,” on Thursday, Dec. 15 and Monday, Dec. 19, both days from 2:30 until 7. The FHC Learning Commons is inviting students to either study for finals alone or with friends. Teachers will be available to offer support, as well as students to help tutor their peers through the tougher aspects of each student’s prospective finals.

They say that charity begins at home, and the World Language Department at Francis Howell Central High School (FHC) believes that to be true. Every year during the Holidays, the teachers and students of that department work with counselors to identify a FHC family that can use some additional help. The family then puts together a wish list of presents they would like to receive in the adopt-a-family campaign.

Two FHSD Students Shine with Perfect ACT Scores

According to recent data, there are only about a thousand students in the United States every year who achieve perfection when taking the ACT test. David Yang from Francis Howell High School (FHHS), and Kayleigh Ammond from Francis Howell Central (FHC), are part of that 0.6% of almost two million students who did what many think is impossible: they received a perfect 36 on the ACT.

It’s a meeting of the state’s future leaders and decision-makers, and a large number of those students were from the Francis Howell School District (FHSD).

Castlio and FHC students take part in National Teacher Training Video

There has to be a better way – that’s what many teachers realize when dealing with challenging behavior from students. Trauma specialists have begun production on a nationally-distributed training video for teachers, recording potential solutions to these issues. Students at two Francis Howell School District (FHSD) schools are getting the opportunity to participate by performing roles in the video. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get some face-time in a video, and also help teachers reach better solutions.
FHSD Journalism Students Continue to Make the Cover

Several Francis Howell School District (FHSD) students were among the many attendees from around the country at the Journalism Educators Association (JEA)/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Nov. 10-13. Awards were taken home by students, further validating the outstanding publication departments at all three high schools in FHSD.

FHC Cheerleading Squad Wins State Championship

The Francis Howell Central High School (FHC) Varsity cheerleading squad made history on Saturday, Nov. 5, as they won the 2016 Missouri Cheerleading Coaches Association State Championship in the “small-coed” division. This was the first championship in program history, after finishing in the “final four” in two previous seasons.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and both Francis Howell High (FHHS) and Francis Howell Central (FHC), dedicated their October sporting events to the cause with their annual “Pink Out” games. Together, both schools raised almost $4,000.

The FHC Spotlight Players are showcasing their fall production of "Almost, Maine," on Nov. 17 at 6:30 p.m., with doors opening at 6:00 p.m. and Nov. 18-19 at 7:00 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Tickets will be on sale during lunches from Nov. 7-18. Tickets are $6.00 at lunch and $8.00 at the door.

Army Parents Come Home from Kuwait to Surprise Son for His Birthday

We all think our birthday presents are special, no matter how old we are. But one student at Francis Howell Central High School, Chucho Conner, had perhaps the most special birthday present of all. His father and stepmother both have been stationed in Kuwait, serving our country in the United States Army. Today they surprised him at school with an early return.
FHSD Hosts Activities Leadership Summit

During fall break in the Francis Howell School District (FHSD), most students took a breather from their hectic schedules of homework, testing, and other school activities to recharge their proverbial batteries for the rest of the semester. But one group took special advantage of their days off, with 20 members from each high school getting together at Francis Howell North (FHN) High School to become better leaders in their communities. They listened to guest speakers and took part in activities to learn more about what it takes to improve their teams or clubs, schools, and community.
Francis Howell Central Media Specialists Selected as METC Spotlight Educators

Kelly Hauquitz and Andrea Head, both media specialists at Francis Howell Central High School (FHC), have been selected as 2017 Midwest Education Technology Community (METC) Spotlight Educators. Both will be honored at the 2017 METC Conference during the Speaker Dinner on Monday, Feb. 13, 2017, and during the conference keynote sessions. In addition, each Spotlight Educator will also be presenting sessions during the conference.
Nineteen FHSD Students Named National Merit Commended Scholars and Semifinalists

A total of 19 Francis Howell School District (FHSD) students have been recognized for their academic achievement by being named National Merit Commended Scholars and National Merit Semi-Finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). NMSC announced the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists during their annual event in September, and these high achievers now have the opportunity to move on in the competition for a chance to receive one of 7,500 scholarships, totaling more than $33 million, which will be offered to the winners next spring.
FHSD Schools Celebrate National Red Ribbon Week

The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) will be dipped in red the week of Oct. 24-28, as schools across the District and the nation celebrate Red Ribbon Week, an event dedicated to raising awareness for alcohol, tobacco, drugs and violence prevention. Many FHSD schools will educate students on drug prevention with special events, activities and fun-themed spirit days.
Angel Ikeda Honored by St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame as “Future Star”

Angel Ikeda may already be a star to the Francis Howell Central (FHC) High School community, but on Oct. 15 her stardom was shared with a much larger community. During The St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame annual awards banquet, Ikeda was announced as one of four students in the metro area to receive prestigious recognition as a St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame “Future Star.”

New FHSD Safety Measures Include Unannounced Intruder Drills

Student safety is always a top priority of the Francis Howell School District (FHSD). The District annually conducts a variety of safety drills including fire, tornado, earthquake and intruder drills. Participation in these safety drills is where most students get directly involved in their own safety. New this year, FHSD will conduct one unannounced intruder drill at each of our schools.

Francis Howell Central High School (FHC) can add one more outstanding student to its list of successful 2016 graduates. Haley Clark is one of only five recipients in the country to receive the 2016 National Vision Inc. College Scholarship. The award will provide her with $2,500 to use for her education at Rockhurst University, where she is majoring in microbiology.

The Advanced Placement (AP) Program recognizes high school students who have demonstrated outstanding college-level achievement through AP courses and exams with the “AP Scholar Awards.” The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) had 233 juniors and seniors that earned this prestigious award for 2015-16.
FHSD Recognized for Bus Safety

The buses that safely transport students of the Francis Howell School District (FHSD) every day will display a special new sticker starting in August, after earning the “Total Fleet Excellence” distinction for 2016. The stickers indicate excellence in the overall maintenance and reliability of the District’s bus fleet. The distinction is determined by the Missouri State Highway Patrol based on the results of the annual school bus inspection, a program conducted by the Patrol’s Motor Vehicle Inspection Division.
FHSD Fosters Leadership Through Sports – FHSD High School’s named MSHSAA Leadership Schools

All three Francis Howell School District (FHSD) high school athletic programs were recently named “Leadership Schools” by the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA), the governing body of high school sports in the state. It’s an award created to honor sportsmanship and leadership in school. And if it’s something that FHSD sports has been known to exhibit, it is sportsmanship.

New Immunization Requirement for Incoming Eighth Graders and Seniors

Beginning with the 2016-17 school year, all eighth grade students and incoming high school seniors will be required to have the meningococcal (meningitis) vaccine. These immunizations are required by the State of Missouri prior to the start of school.
