Students of the Francis Howell Central (FHC) High School chapter of Missouri DECA: An Association of Marketing Students joined more than 700 other high-school marketing students at the annual DECA District Career Development Conference on Feb. 8, 2017, at Chesterfield Mall.

DECA competitive events are designed to assist in career preparation. First, they contribute to the development of skills necessary for careers in marketing, management, and merchandising. They also motivate students to assume responsibility for self-improvement and self-discipline. In addition, these events assist students in acquiring a realistic self-concept through individual and group activities. Finally, DECA competitive events provide visibility for the educational goals and objectives of marketing education. That’s what it means to administrators and potential employers. To the students, however, DECA is so much more.

FHC’s Austin McKinley received first place in the Leadership Delegate competition, an outstanding accomplishment. To him, DECA’s allure is about the experience. “It’s really fun,” McKinley said, “and you get to be a part of something. We get to go on field trips that put us in real-life scenarios.”

More than field trips, DECA conferences are an opportunity for students like McKinley to show what they have to offer – not just to others, but to themselves. Specifically for McKinley, he was able to highlight his leadership. “Leadership is someone who doesn’t do something for the good of themselves,” McKinley said, “they do it for others. They’re selfless and caring for others.”

The following 28 students will advance to the state competition (DECA State Development Conference) on March 14-16, in Lake Ozark, Missouri. Students receiving recognition of individual ability and achievement at the district level were:
